The Rays uses starling bones as indicators of a fox's journey: Lindo's winter paths that shifted in meaning when, long after I had written his story, I followed the flight of a cuckoo in spring into a kind of ritual closure and a new beginning. At that time, the bones suggested a sequence of hand gestures: signs and instructions for negotiating a unicursal labyrinth. Here Lindo and bird are not deprived of their occlusions but, for human senses at least, I thought to draw, through music and movements of a hand, an unambiguous route to the centre which is an enclosure for their shared spirit.
